Cleveland Scene coverage of KOCARLSON show
KOCARLSON
Both George (F) Kocar and John (W) Carlson paint and draw the human figure, but in wildly different ways. Kocar's work has a level of distortion and exaggeration and a color palette appropriate for cartoons, while Carlson's muted tones, realistic perspectives and proportions give his work a more serious look. They're exhibiting together in a show opening Saturday at The Art Gallery, 4099 Erie St. in Willoughby. An opening reception runs from 6 to 9 p.m. The show hangs through October 11. Free. COMBINED COLLECTION
Two renowned local artists are coming together to present an interesting look into the world of contemporary, figurative art. KOCARLSON will combine the works of George F. Kocar and John W. Carlson at the Art Gallery in historic Willoughby (4099 Erie Street) from September 13 to October 11; the opening night reception begins at 6 p.m.
Kocar and Carlson have unique styles, very different from one another. Kocar uses vibrant colors and paints cartoonish, banana-nosed figures, often in political and humorous themes. Carlson employs earth tones in rough, sketchlike scenes that express what he calls “the delicacies and vulgarities of humanity.” For this show, Kocar will exhibit paintings and Carlson will show paintings and drawings. Both artists are from the Cleveland area and currently reside in Bay Village. For more information, call the gallery at 440-946-8001 or see www.artgallerywilloughby.com. Both artists are also featured in the 44th annual juried show at Trumbull Art Gallery in Warren, through September 19.
